Why We Can’t Sleep Even When We Are Tired

Getting enough sleep is essential for optimal health and well-being.

When we do not get adequate sleep the risk of health problems including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, a weakened immune system, and endocrine disorders increase significantly. A proper sleep is not only important for optimal health, but also aids you in recovering from illness.  Most cellular recovery occurs during sleep and lack of sleep or disrupted sleep patterns can result in incomplete cellular repair leading to further health concerns.

Individuals who experience stress, anxiety, depression, pain or discomfort, tend to have more difficulties falling asleep. When they do fall asleep, it is often light and not recovering. Maintaining a good sleep during the night can also be challenging because of hypoglycemia or other sleep conditions such as sleep apnea, nocturnal myoclonus, or the use of drugs/alcohol.

The naturopathic approach to sleep management examines all the aspects that may influence a person’s ability to get a proper sleep during the night. Identifying and working in correcting factors such as: bedtime environment, mental- emotional health, hypoglycemia/ blood sugar, hormonal imbalances including cortisol level, medications or other substances are fundamental to improve the overall quality of sleep and your health.

To correct or prevent these underlying issues, a naturopathic doctor can use different natural modalities as: nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy, diet and lifestyle changes depends of the treatment’s goal and patient’s preference.
